China’s official news agency Xinhua reported that “the latest wave of severe thunderstorms has resulted in 30 fatalities in Beijing as of midnight.”

Chinese authorities have declared the highest level of emergency response for flood control in Beijing.

A statement issued by city authorities noted that heavy rainfall is expected to continue across most areas of the capital until 10:00 AM local time on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday evening ordered local authorities to “make comprehensive search and rescue efforts to minimize human and material losses,” stressing the need to accelerate relief operations and ensure shelter for those affected in areas most vulnerable to flooding.
