Philippine authorities announced on Wednesday morning that the powerful earthquake, measuring 6.9 in magnitude, which struck the central part of the archipelago on Tuesday evening, has so far left up to 60 people dead and hundreds injured. The death toll is expected to rise.

According to the Philippine News Agency, Deputy Administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, Raffy Alejandro, told reporters in Manila: “We are still receiving an increasing number of reports of casualties, so the situation is highly volatile. We have received reports indicating that as many as 60 people have been killed in this earthquake.”
An earlier toll released overnight had reported at least 34 dead.
