The second phase of Lebanon’s municipal and local (mukhtar) elections began on Sunday morning in the northern governorates of North Lebanon and Akkar. The elections are being held in a competitive atmosphere where political and familial dynamics are intertwined, similar to what occurred during the first round last Sunday in Mount Lebanon.

The elections feature politically charged contests in several towns—both large and small—as parties seek to gauge their influence ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for May of next year.
During a visit to the Internal Security Forces’ operations room to monitor the elections, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated, "What is happening today sends a message both domestically and internationally that the Lebanese state is back on the right track."
Aoun emphasized that "municipal and local elections are developmental entitlements, not political ones."
He urged citizens in the north to vote in large numbers, saying, "We hope our people in the north will vote in greater numbers and vote for the project, not the individual," and praised the performance of the security forces throughout the electoral process.
