Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a constitutional declaration stipulating that if the position of President of the Palestinian National Authority becomes vacant, and in the absence of the Legislative Council, the Vice Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee and Vice President of the State of Palestine will temporarily assume the duties of the Presidency of the National Authority.

According to the decree, this interim period shall not exceed ninety days, during which free and direct elections must be held to elect a new president, in accordance with the Palestinian Election Law. If elections cannot be held within this period due to force majeure, the Central Palestinian Council may extend the period once, as reported by the WAFA news agency.
The new constitutional declaration repeals Constitutional Declaration No. (1) of 2024 to safeguard the national interest of the Palestinian people.
