The Iraqi Health Ministry spokesperson said in a statement that all those affected were treated and provided with medical care after the ministry dispatched more than 50 ambulances to the site of the incident.

Most of the injuries were minor, the spokesperson said, adding that only 21 patients remained hospitalized. He confirmed that all hospitalized patients were in stable condition except for one, while medical teams continued to provide care and monitor the injured.

Basra is one of Iraq’s main industrial centers and is home to a number of facilities and plants linked to the oil, petrochemical and fertilizer sectors. Ammonia gas is used in fertilizer production, but exposure to high concentrations can pose health risks to workers and people in the surrounding area, particularly affecting the respiratory system and eyes.
