Microsoft has reached a significant milestone with Windows 11, just months before support for Windows 10 is set to end. According to data monitored by Windows Central, Windows 11 has become the most widely used desktop operating system, nearly four years after its release. It now holds 52% of the market share, compared to 44.59% for Windows 10.

While Windows 11 had already become the most popular operating system among PC gamers as of last September, its overall adoption rate had remained below that of Windows 10—until now.
Leaked data from October 2023 revealed that Windows 11 was running on over 400 million devices at the time. However, this growth rate was slower than that of Windows 10, which reached the same milestone in just one year, compared to Windows 11's two years.
One key factor behind Windows 11's slower adoption has been its stricter hardware requirements. Although Microsoft offered a free upgrade for Windows 10 users, millions of devices were ineligible due to more demanding CPU and security specifications. In an effort to encourage upgrades, Microsoft has sometimes resorted to full-screen prompts nudging users toward Windows 11.
Support for Windows 10 is scheduled to end on October 14, and Microsoft recently announced that users will receive one free year of additional security updates—but only if they enable Windows Backup and sync their Documents folder with OneDrive. Otherwise, users will have to pay $30 USD for one year of updates or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
