Although millions of users are familiar with the Ctrl+Alt+Del shortcut as a way to access the Task Manager or sign out, the Emergency Restart option in Windows has remained a hidden feature for many, despite existing for decades.

According to a report by Lifehacker, this rare feature is used in extreme cases when the system is almost completely frozen, and the user cannot access the "Start" menu or standard shutdown options.
What is an Emergency Restart?
In terms of effectiveness, this feature is similar to long-pressing the physical power button on your computer. It reboots the system immediately without any warnings or saving changes.
Windows warns the user that all unsaved data will be lost, making its use strictly reserved for emergency situations.
How to Access the Feature
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to open the options screen.
In the bottom right corner, locate the Power button icon.
While holding down the Ctrl key, click on the Restart option.
An "Emergency Restart" warning screen will appear. Confirm your choice, and the system will reboot immediately.
This option is particularly useful when the system stops responding entirely or when the Graphical User Interface (GUI) crashes and traditional shortcuts fail.
Other Alternatives for Restarting
For advanced users who prefer command-line methods, the system can be restarted via the Command Prompt (CMD) using the following command:
shutdown /r
Additional switches can be added, such as:
/f: To force applications to close.
/t: To set a countdown timer for the restart.
Despite its effectiveness, the lack of clear official documentation and the existence of more common alternatives have left many users—and even tech experts—surprised when discovering this feature for the first time.
