Bill Gates said there isn't a single government in the world prepared for the changes artificial intelligence will bring to society, warning of future risks.

The billionaire and Microsoft co-founder had been optimistic about artificial intelligence until recently, but he has shifted his position, warning of threats to jobs, concerns about attacks, and the risks of addiction facing AI enthusiasts.
Gates said in an interview with Reuters: "I don't think any government is giving this the level of attention it deserves." However, he added that this technology holds enormous potential to help the world's poorest people if managed properly and made accessible on an equal footing.
The charitable foundation that bears Gates's name announced today (Tuesday) that it plans to spend at least $1 billion over the next two years on expanding access to artificial intelligence.
Gates said he has spoken with world leaders about his concerns, including US President Donald Trump and his team, and noted that he intends to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. He added: "Governments are lagging far behind in this field."
But despite his concerns, Gates and his foundation hope that artificial intelligence will help narrow the gaps between the rich and the poor, rather than widen them.
The foundation said the $1 billion spending plan, part of its previously announced plans to spend $9 billion annually, will be allocated to partners working in the fields of education, healthcare, and agriculture.
It also aims to help build the data foundations that artificial intelligence relies on, such as ensuring large language models work in every language people speak.
Gates said: "In the field of health, it's hard to overstate the potential," ranging from supporting frontline healthcare workers to discovering new drugs and vaccines.
But he noted that governments need to work together to avoid problems, comparing the emergence of artificial intelligence to a disaster movie.
He said: "There are all kinds of movies where aliens show up, and somehow magically the United States and China and everyone unite to solve the problem. AI is a bit like that alien intelligence. It's actually happened, and it would be best for us to act the way it plays out in those movies."
