Google is rolling out a major update to its Gemini Notebook app, formerly known as NotebookLM, aimed at students, adding a set of new features designed to help them understand difficult concepts, record lectures, and turn study materials into interactive learning tools.

The update coincides with the rollout of a free one-year subscription to Google's paid AI plan for eligible university students.
Gemini Notebook can now discuss your notes with you by voice
The most notable new addition is the ability to have real-time voice conversations with notebooks.
Google says this feature will let users discuss difficult topics through the Gemini Notebook app on mobile phones in nearly 100 languages.
Users will also be able to ask follow-up questions, get step-by-step explanations, and interrupt the conversation at any time when needed.
The feature is set to start rolling out to Google AI Ultra subscribers this week, followed later by the Pro plan and other plans.

Gemini Notebook will also get a built-in recording tool in its mobile app starting next week.
It will let users record lectures or quickly jot down ideas on the go, with these recordings appearing directly alongside existing sources within the notebook.
Quizzes and flashcards make studying more interactive
Google is also expanding the interactive learning tools found in the Reports section, adding new quiz formats, such as short-answer questions, multiple-choice questions, and fill-in-the-blank questions.
These tools let students test themselves, ask Gemini about the points they got wrong, and then adjust the questions afterward.

The update also includes a new format for short video summaries, condensing complex topics into shareable video clips about 60 seconds long, available in more than 80 languages.
The new learning summaries and quiz formats are set to roll out gradually to all users over the coming weeks.

This update builds on the "Student Hub" feature that Google added to Gemini last month.
The offer includes a free one-year subscription to Google AI Pro for eligible university students in the United States, giving them usage limits four times higher than the free plan.
Students outside the United States instead receive a free one-year subscription to Google AI Plus, which offers double the usage limits available on the free plan.
Both offers remain available until the end of this year.
