Pierre Cote spent years on public health waiting lists, trying to find a therapist to help him cope with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.

When he couldn’t find one, he did what few would consider: he built one himself.
Speaking about Dr. Ellis.AI, an AI-powered tool designed to support men facing addiction, trauma, and other mental health challenges, Cote said: “It saved my life.”
Cote, who runs an AI consulting firm in Quebec, Canada, explained that he developed the tool in 2023, using publicly available large language models. He equipped it with a “brain built specifically for therapy,” based on thousands of pages of therapeutic materials.
Like a human therapist, the chatbot has a past—though it is entirely fictional.
