Since the launch of the new iPhone 17 series, controversy has surrounded the so-called “iPhone scratches,” after photos and videos circulated showing iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air models with visible marks, particularly on darker colors like “Deep Blue” and “Black.” This sparked concerns about the durability of the new design and the quality of materials used.

In its first official response, Apple confirmed that the marks appearing on devices in its stores are not actual scratches. Instead, they result from residue transferred from the older “MagSafe” display stands used repeatedly, which can leave traces on the back of the phones.
The company explained that these marks are temporary and easy to remove by cleaning, and do not indicate any weakness in the phone’s structure, according to Tom’s Guide.
Varied User Experiences
However, some reviewers reported minor actual scratches on certain new devices, such as the iPhone 17 Pro in “Cosmic Orange,” while other models, like the Deep Blue Pro Max, did not show similar issues. This raised questions about personal usage habits—whether users keep their phones alone in pockets or alongside keys and other devices in bags.
Aluminum Frame Criticism
Alongside the “scratch issue,” criticism emerged regarding the aluminum frame. Durability tests conducted by the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything showed that the anodized coating on the edges, especially around the camera bump, can wear off when rubbed against small metal objects like keys or coins.
Apple emphasized that this behavior is consistent with previous devices, including older MacBooks and iPhones, noting that the aluminum used is durable, although like any coated metal, it is prone to minor wear over time.
Why Aluminum Instead of Titanium?
Apple’s decision to use aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max instead of titanium was primarily technical, aimed at improving device cooling. Early tests indicated more stable and longer performance compared to the iPhone 16 Pro and competitor Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Since the phones have only been on the market for a few days, judging long-term durability is premature. While some users report no scratches, others have observed them.
Given the mixed experiences, the most practical advice for consumers remains using a protective case to safeguard the phone from scratches or unexpected impacts.
