Cardiology specialist Professor Yuri Belinkov warns that as people age, many strive to maintain “ideal” blood pressure levels similar to those of astronauts, but this goal can often be ineffective or even harmful, especially for seniors.

Professor Belinkov explains:
“Lowering blood pressure to below 120/80 mmHg in old age is unsafe due to the following reasons:
Age-related narrowing of the carotid arteries
Excessive drops in blood pressure can reduce cerebral blood flow, increasing the risk of stroke.”
He further notes that if the difference between systolic (upper) and diastolic (lower) blood pressure is very small, it’s not necessarily alarming—but the underlying cause must be investigated. In some cases, it may be due to elevated diastolic pressure, which can indicate high blood pressure, even if the systolic reading appears normal.
According to Belinkov, possible underlying causes may include:
Kidney disease
Vascular conditions
He also points out that a naturally low systolic pressure is common among slender women, and in such cases, it usually does not pose any health risk.
