Many people believe that increasing the amount of toothpaste on the brush improves dental cleaning.

However, according to dentist Mariana Paragonova and orthodontics specialist, this is a misconception. She explains the exact amount of toothpaste necessary for effective oral hygiene—and the risks of misusing it.اضافة اعلان

She clarifies: “For adults, a strip of toothpaste about one centimeter long is sufficient. This amount is enough to create foam and activate the beneficial ingredients that strengthen tooth enamel and protect the gums.”

She added that using less than the recommended amount reduces the toothpaste’s effectiveness and lowers the quality of cleaning. Without enough foam, the protective fluoride layer that prevents enamel damage won’t form properly, making it harder to remove plaque and food residue. As a result, brushing becomes just a routine that doesn’t serve its purpose well.

On the other hand, using too much toothpaste is also not beneficial, as it creates a false sense of cleanliness due to excessive foam, often leading people to stop brushing earlier than needed. It also increases the risk of abrasive particles affecting the enamel and gums.

For children, the guidelines differ by age:

Up to 3 years old → a rice-grain-sized amount is sufficient.

From 3 to 6 years old → a pea-sized amount is recommended.

The expert concludes: “Everyone should know that the quality of brushing is not determined by the amount of toothpaste, but by the correct technique and the time spent. Two minutes of proper brushing, done regularly, is what ensures healthy teeth—not extra toothpaste.” (gazeta.ru)
