On the occasion of World Scoliosis Awareness Day, which falls on 25 June, health efforts are increasing to highlight the importance of early detection and provide accurate medical information that helps families understand and manage the condition properly, reducing the likelihood of long-term complications resulting from neglecting treatment.

What is scoliosis? And how does spinal deviation occur?
Scoliosis is medically defined as a lateral curvature of the spine that often appears during the period of rapid growth before puberty. According to Mayo Clinic, most conditions are not known to cause exactly, although some are related to neurological or muscular disorders.

Scoliosis is usually caused by an imbalance in the growth between the bones and ligaments surrounding the spine, which leads to it deviating from its normal position and losing its straightness.

This deviation is not only sideways (right or left), but is also accompanied by a three-dimensional rotation of the vertebrae, which further complicates and severity of the condition. As this rotation continues, the structure of the rib cage and rib bones that move with the twisted vertebrae are affected, which can lead to a pronounced protrusion in the back in some cases.

In advanced stages, a spinal deviation may put pressure on the thoracic cavity, affecting lung function and Heart, and emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and medical follow-up to reduce possible complications.
