During their research, scientists studied the effects of beta-glucan—a type of soluble dietary fiber abundantly found in oats and oat bran. They tested the effects of this fiber on laboratory mice with type 2 diabetes, giving the animals varying daily doses over a period of ten weeks.

The results showed that adding beta-glucan to the mice's diet helped improve their blood sugar levels, enhanced glucose tolerance, and reduced liver cell damage. The test animals also experienced a decrease in harmful triglyceride levels, certain liver enzymes, and pro-inflammatory substances in the body, including interleukin-6 (a protein produced by body cells during infection and inflammation).

Researchers attribute this effect to changes in the gut microbiota composition of the test mice. Following the consumption of beta-glucan, beneficial bacteria that support the intestinal barrier increased, while the number of microorganisms linked to inflammation decreased.

A previous scientific study also showed that barley varieties rich in beta-glucan specifically stimulate the production of butyrate—a short-chain fatty acid that helps support gut health, reduce inflammation, and serve as an energy source for cells in the intestinal wall. Another study conducted by researchers at the University of Barcelona indicated that a diet rich in fermentable fibers and polyphenols can support gut microbiota health and boost the immune response.
