Dr. Victoria Bogosyan, a gastroenterologist, says drinking water while eating is completely normal and does not negatively affect digestion.

She explained that the belief that drinking water during meals dilutes stomach acid and interferes with digestion is incorrect. Water does not remain in the stomach like food; it leaves the stomach more quickly, particularly when consumed separately from meals. The rate at which the stomach empties also depends on the composition and volume of its contents.اضافة اعلان

She noted that water may temporarily alter the acidity level of stomach contents, but this does not affect the digestive process.

“The stomach regulates acid production, while the digestive system is designed to alter the composition of its contents. Water also helps moisten food and makes it easier to swallow, so drinking it during meals is perfectly normal,” she said.

She added that other beverages, such as juices and soft drinks, do not in themselves affect the absorption of food.

“Sweetened beverages increase the number of calories consumed, while carbonated drinks may worsen symptoms of bloating, belching and reflux in some people. In general, people can consume fluids during meals, but they should choose beverages according to their preferences and feel free to drink water whenever they wish,” she said.

The doctor warned that tea, coffee and milk may reduce the absorption of iron from food and may also affect the absorption of some medications. Therefore, it is preferable to take medications with plain water unless a doctor advises otherwise.
