A new study published in the journal Biology of Sex Differences reveals that men fall in love nearly twice as fast as women.
Researchers at the Australian National University surveyed 808 young adults aged 18 to 25 from 33 different countries, including the United States, to explore gender differences in romantic experiences, according to the New York Post.
Key Findings:
On average, men reported falling in love just 0.98 months (about 4 weeks) into a romantic relationship, while women took about 1.92 months — nearly double the time.
Men also reported falling in love more often:
Men: average of 2.6 times
Women: average of 2.3 times
Why Do Men Fall Faster?
The researchers explained that men tend to prioritize quantity over quality in potential partners, while women are generally more selective. This aligns with evolutionary theories about mating strategies.
“Men are more likely to fall in love sooner than women because they favor a greater number of potential mates, whereas women are more focused on partner quality,” the researchers wrote.
Emotional Intensity: Women Feel Deeper
While men may fall faster and more often, the study found that women experience more intense emotions once they commit:
Higher levels of romantic intensity
Greater emotional commitment
Increased obsessive thoughts about their partners
Conclusion:
Although men may be quicker to fall, women tend to feel love more deeply and with more intensity. The study suggests that these gender-based differences are shaped by both biological factors and evolutionary pressures.
