Google has managed to solve the problem of GPS signal loss when using its Maps app in tunnels and underground locations.
According to a report by the German news agency DPA, the solution relies on a new technology called Bluetooth Beacons. These small devices are installed in tunnels around the world and transmit GPS-like signals to ensure uninterrupted location tracking.

The Waze app, also owned by Google, has supported this feature for some time. It allows the app to continue receiving location and map data even when the network signal is weak or lost.
Google had acquired Waze in 2013 for $1.3 billion to integrate its unique features into Google Maps.
The company now plans to roll out this feature in major tunnels, starting in the United States, with further expansion to other countries in the future.
The feature can be activated directly within the Google Maps app on Android phones. To enable it:
Go to the app’s settings → navigation settings → and activate the option at the bottom of the list.
This new feature solves one of the major issues users have faced when navigating through long tunnels, where GPS signals used to completely drop out.
