Olesya Makhova, an expert at the Russian Quality System, said that plant-based foods promote kidney health and reduce the strain on the kidneys. She noted that certain categories of these foods should be included in the daily diet.

According to Makhova, legumes such as chickpeas, beans, lentils and peas should be a top priority. The body tolerates plant protein better than animal protein, allowing the kidneys to function under less strain. Whole grains, including buckwheat, oats, brown rice and whole-wheat bread, are also beneficial additions to the diet. Their fibre content helps maintain metabolic processes and eliminate excess compounds from the body.
“The main mistake is believing that adding one or two healthy foods to the diet is enough. The kidneys do not respond to a single type of food, but to the overall diet. The more varied the diet, the less strain is placed on the kidneys. That is why I recommend not searching for a ‘superfood,’ but gradually expanding the range of plant-based dishes on the table,” she said.
The recommendations also include nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseeds, which are rich in fibre and healthy fats. However, she advised people with a genetic predisposition to kidney stones to be cautious when consuming sorrel, beetroot and spinach, as these contain substances that increase the risk of kidney stone formation.
The expert stressed that if a urinary tract condition is diagnosed, dietary changes should be tailored to the individual, taking potassium and phosphorus levels into account.
“A plant-based diet is not a universal solution for everyone. Therefore, consulting a doctor is not a mere formality, but a necessity,” she said.
