Al-Maghtas, located about 9 km north of the Dead Sea, is considered one of the holiest sites on earth for all Christian denominations. Efforts to preserve and protect it are part of the historical responsibility toward holy sites east of the Jordan River.
Saint Pope John Paul II declared Al-Maghtas, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, a Christian pilgrimage destination during his historic visit in 2000.
The site welcomes Christian pilgrims from all denominations and has been visited by Saint Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis, and many senior religious and political leaders.
