The formation of the committee comes in implementation of the Royal directives issued by His Majesty King Abdullah II during his visit to Karak Governorate on November 28, 2024, where His Majesty emphasized the need for an integrated plan to preserve Karak Castle and breathe new life into the old city streets and buildings.
During the meeting, held at the Royal Hashemite Court, the committee reviewed a detailed report on the key projects included in its executive plan. These projects involve rehabilitation, maintenance, and development works for Karak Castle; upgrading the buildings surrounding the castle square; establishing a handicrafts center; and rehabilitating the Shrine of Al-Khidr. The plan also includes following up on the phases of the city's master plan, which covers documenting and inventorying heritage houses and organizing the transportation system within the city.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on Thursday, the meeting discussed several major development projects, including urgent solutions to complete the Baraka/Karak Gate tourism project, the development of Wadi Ibn Hammad, and tourism development projects in Wadi Mujib. It also addressed road paving, maintenance of sidewalks and curbstones in the city center, and launching the pilot operation of buses to serve visitors and local residents.
The report also reviewed the progress of the cable car project, the operation of the new Karak complex, and the completion of demolishing old buildings adjacent to the castle square — including the former tourism building and the Awqaf/Sharia School building. Additionally, it highlighted the relocation of the security center and tourism police back to the city center, as well as the completion of the lighting project for the Mujib Road.
