The exact time of thorns emergence in plants has not been determined, but it is believed that they evolved over millions of years to protect plants from herbivores and arid environments to reduce evaporation.

However, in Jordanian amber, scientist Abbas Haddadin discovered a 140-million-year-old leaf with thorns at its edges. This specimen represents the first time thorns appeared on plants.
Haddadin says that when the climate became dry for a prolonged period, these thorns appeared on the leaves to retain water inside the leaf and reduce evaporation, as in the picture: thorns at the edges of a 140-million-year-old plant leaf.
