Scientist Abbas Haddadin discovered cockroaches in Jordanian amber dating back 140 million years in the Wadi al-Zarqa region. These cockroaches fed on dinosaur remains and plants, making them the oldest cockroaches found in amber anywhere in the world.

Cockroaches of the same age were also found in Lebanese amber. These cockroaches are a link between ancient extinct life and modern life. Cockroaches appeared on earth in the Carboniferous period, 300 million years ago, making them 70 million years older than dinosaurs.
