In a post on X, Tilley said his priorities would focus on improving the Army’s effectiveness in recruitment, training, equipping and modernization. He added that he would draw on his previous experience in developing and restructuring parts of the military establishment.

Tilley stressed that the US Army would receive the latest technologies and combat capabilities. “My mission is to ensure that we never send our forces into an equal fight with our adversaries,” he said, pledging to provide troops with everything necessary to achieve complete superiority over their opponents.

President Donald Trump announced the appointment of Tilley, who currently serves as Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, as acting Secretary of the Army effective Thursday.

Tilley’s appointment came days after Dan Driscoll stepped down from the position following reports of disagreements with the leadership of the US Defense Department, known as the Pentagon.

Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform: “I am pleased to announce that Adam Tilley, the current Assistant Secretary of the Army, will serve as Acting Secretary of the Army, effective immediately. He is a great patriot who is respected by all.”

Tilley was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of the Army in August 2025 after the US Senate confirmed his appointment. He spent much of his professional career working as a congressional aide.

Driscoll’s departure marked the latest departure of a senior military official under the Trump administration.

Driscoll, a former law school classmate of Vice President JD Vance, had benefited from his relationship with Vance within the administration before becoming embroiled in disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
