Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tuesday that relations between Russia and Iran had reached their highest level in history, following a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during the latter’s first visit since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East in late February.اضافة اعلان

Araghchi wrote on X: “Never in our history have Iran and Russia worked with the level of closeness that we are witnessing today.”

During their talks, Araghchi and Lavrov discussed a range of issues, including Lebanon, Palestine, Ukraine and Yemen, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation in the economic and nuclear fields.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, “Russian-Iranian cooperation continues to develop dynamically despite the known circumstances. We have a solid foundation for continuing to move forward at a steady pace.”

Araghchi blamed the United States for tensions and insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz, saying what he described as “US-Israeli aggression against Iran,” along with the economic blockade imposed on his country, were among the main causes of insecurity in the region.

Lavrov, for his part, reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to its strategic cooperation document with Tehran.

He stressed the continuation of cooperation between the two countries and the convergence of their positions on regional issues, while calling on his Iranian counterpart to resolve regional disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. He also blamed the United States for tensions and insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz.

Lavrov arrived in Iran on Monday in his first visit of its kind since the start of US-Israeli strikes that triggered the war in the Middle East.

In early October, Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian that Russia was ready to contribute to mediation efforts related to the war in the Middle East.

Russia and Iran are among the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world and maintain close political ties.
