U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday evening that American forces deployed near Iran will remain in the region until a “real agreement” is reached, following the start of a fragile two-week ceasefire with Tehran.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that “all U.S. ships, aircraft, military personnel, along with additional ammunition and weapons, and everything appropriate and necessary to deliver a decisive defeat to an enemy that has been significantly weakened, will remain in their positions in and around Iran until full compliance with the real agreement that has been reached.”
Iran stated on Wednesday that moving forward with talks to reach a permanent peace agreement with the United States would be “illogical” after Israel carried out its most intense airstrikes on Lebanon, resulting in more than 250 deaths.
The United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire just one hour before the expiration of the deadline set by Donald Trump to strike Iran, with peace talks set to begin in Islamabad.
The United States also received a ten-point proposal from Iran, which it considers a practical basis for negotiations.
