Trump stated in a press briefing that “the transitional authorities in Venezuela will hand over 30 to 50 million barrels of high-quality oil under sanctions to Washington.”
He added, “The oil we receive from Venezuela will be sold at market price, and I, as President of the United States, will oversee the management of its revenues.” He further explained that he had instructed the Energy Secretary to implement the plan immediately, with the oil to be transported via storage tankers and shipped to U.S. unloading ports.
Separately, U.S. network ABC reported that the Trump administration informed Venezuela’s interim leader that several conditions must be met before allowing an increase in the country’s oil production.
Sources indicated that Washington’s conditions include severing Venezuela’s economic ties with China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba. The U.S. also required Caracas to agree to an exclusive partnership with the United States in oil production as part of any future energy-sector arrangements.
Earlier, the United States carried out a major operation in Venezuela, during which President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were detained and flown out of the country.
