Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney poked fun at U.S. President Donald Trump by mimicking his well-known “accordion hands” gesture during a speech in Ottawa, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.

While discussing a C$70 billion clean-energy package, Carney said the investment was “functionally equivalent to 18 Hoover Dams.” He then exaggeratedly moved his hands inward and outward in a gesture resembling one frequently used by Trump during his speeches.
The 61-year-old prime minister repeated the phrase “18 Hoover Dams” as the audience laughed and reacted to the imitation of Trump’s hand movements.
Carney smiled and told the audience, “Enough,” but then repeated the gesture, moving his hands again in a manner resembling Trump’s signature style. The audience responded with more laughter, cheers and applause before Carney regained his composure and continued his speech.
The lighthearted moment came as Carney was advocating deeper ties between Canada and the European Union, particularly in areas including energy, defense, critical minerals and technology. It also came amid strained relations between Ottawa and Washington over trade.
Trump, 80, is known for his pronounced hand gestures while speaking. His repeated movement of both hands inward and outward has become widely known online as the “accordion hands” gesture and has frequently been imitated and mocked, including by political figures and comedians.
