Chairing the committee’s meeting on the sidelines of the 166th regular session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, Safadi also briefed members on efforts to halt the violations and counter attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo in the city and its Arab, Islamic and Christian identity, based on the historic Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites.
Safadi reviewed the latest developments regarding Israeli violations in occupied Jerusalem, as well as the committee’s work since its 10th meeting, held in September last year. He outlined the actions and contacts undertaken by Jordan and committee members with influential countries and international organizations to counter Israeli violations targeting occupied Jerusalem, its residents and its Islamic and Christian holy sites.
The meeting also addressed ways to confront and halt the condemned attacks and rejected violations, which are taking place amid a dangerous escalation of Israeli actions in the West Bank and Israeli violations of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Committee members underscored the importance of the historic Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem’s Arab Islamic and Christian holy sites in protecting them, preserving their Arab, Islamic and Christian identity, and maintaining the historical and legal status quo.
They also affirmed that the Jerusalem Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, affiliated with Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Sites, has exclusive jurisdiction over all affairs of Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif and the regulation of access to the site.
The committee’s 11th meeting was held pursuant to Arab League Council Ministerial Resolution No. 8660, adopted on May 11, 2021, concerning Israeli aggression against occupied Jerusalem and its residents, including Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif and Sheikh Jarrah. The resolution called for the formation of an Arab ministerial committee to engage and communicate with permanent members of the UN Security Council and other countries, particularly those with international influence.
The committee, chaired by Jordan, includes Iraq, in its capacity as chair of the current 34th Arab Summit; Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Qatar, Egypt, Morocco, Bahrain, as the Arab non-permanent member of the UN Security Council; Somalia, as a member of the Security Council; and the Secretary-General of the Arab League.
The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Arab League General Secretariat on the sidelines of the 166th regular session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level.
