Amman - Gas pumping to Syria via Jordan resumed on Wednesday as part of a Jordanian-Syrian agreement to support the Syrian electricity sector and alleviate severe energy shortages, according to Sufian Batayneh, Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO).

Batayneh told "Al-Mamlaka" on Wednesday that 70 million cubic feet of gas are being pumped daily to Syria through Jordan.
The Syrian Ministry of Energy confirmed to "Al-Mamlaka" that the resumption of gas flow has already impacted the electrical status in most Syrian governorates. In some regions, power supply reached nearly 24 hours for the first time in years. The ministry noted that this improvement, combined with balanced energy consumption, has contributed to the stability of the national electrical grid.
For his part, Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir stated that signs of improvement in the electricity sector began to emerge following the resumption of gas flow via Jordan and ongoing maintenance work. In a Facebook post, Al-Bashir highlighted that while the 24-hour supply has been achieved in certain areas, work continues to repair faults in transformation stations and transmission lines—particularly in eastern and southern governorates—to expand the scope of electrical stability.
Previously, Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, stated that Jordan effectively began supplying Syria with gas on January 1, 2026, with quantities ranging between 30 and 90 million cubic feet per day. This initiative serves as urgent support for the Syrian energy sector to help reduce power outage hours.
Al-Kharabsheh explained that the project relies on Jordan’s advanced infrastructure. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imported from international markets is received at the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) in the Port of Aqaba, converted back into its gaseous state, and then pumped through the Arab Gas Pipeline toward Syrian territory and on to Damascus, compensating for the current lack of necessary infrastructure on the Syrian side.
He pointed out that this agreement reflects Jordan's pivotal role as a regional energy hub and embodies the Kingdom's approach to supporting the Syrian people while enhancing Arab economic integration.
In January, Jordan and Syria signed a natural gas sale and purchase agreement aimed at supplying Syria with gas through Jordanian territory to support its power sector and mitigate energy deficits.
