Discussions focused on the need to assess the technical condition of the electricity interconnection lines and gas transmission infrastructure in Syria and Lebanon, with Jordan reaffirming its readiness to supply part of the energy needs of both countries.
The ministers agreed to form joint technical teams to evaluate and upgrade transmission lines in a way that serves the interests of all sides, and to develop a matrix of required procedures to be followed up by the participating parties.
The meetings aimed to enhance regional and Arab cooperation in the energy sector, through restarting electricity interconnection projects, resuming gas pumping through the Arab Gas Pipeline, and strengthening joint efforts to improve energy system efficiency and reliability among the three countries.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Dr. Kharabsheh stated that Jordan believes in the need to expand cooperation between the three countries across energy projects, addressing challenges and overcoming obstacles to serve the interests of all parties. He added that the meeting reflects the significant shared opportunities in electricity and gas interconnection projects, in coordination with donor entities such as the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the World Bank. He stressed Jordan’s commitment to maximizing these opportunities and advancing cooperation.
Syria’s Minister Al-Bashir highlighted his country’s strategic geographic location as a link between Jordan and Lebanon for both the Arab Gas Pipeline and the electrical grid. He noted that upgrading affected infrastructure to meet required standards requires ongoing coordination due to damage caused by political circumstances. He added that technical teams are working intensively to rehabilitate the electricity network and address challenges affecting the gas pipeline with Lebanon, noting that interconnection with Jordan is in a high state of readiness.
Lebanon’s Minister Sadé stated that this meeting reflects continued coordination and cooperation with neighboring countries, noting that interconnection projects benefit all involved. He described gas and electricity interconnection as essential for the three states, contributing to stronger regional cooperation and opening the door to broader economic projects in the future.
Jordan has previously affirmed its readiness to supply Lebanon and Syria with part of their energy needs as soon as required arrangements are finalized—particularly the completion of rehabilitation on the Syrian network.
