How Are Rising Remittances From Jordanians Abroad Strengthening the Economy?

Economists say the increase not only strengthens the flow of foreign currency into Jordan but also reflects growing confidence among expatriates in the country's economic stability.

Many Jordanians abroad are choosing to transfer more money home to support their families, place savings in Jordan's banking sector, or invest in real estate and other productive industries. Experts say these inflows are expected to increase liquidity, support domestic consumption and stimulate economic activity.

The United Arab Emirates accounted for the largest share of remittances at 21.9%, followed by the United States (19.9%), Saudi Arabia (17.9%), Qatar (9.5%) and Kuwait (5.4%).

Jordan is home to an estimated 925,000 expatriates, with more than 80% living in Gulf Cooperation Council countries, making overseas workers one of the country's most important sources of foreign currency alongside tourism.

Economists attribute the increase to several factors, including improved incomes in Gulf countries driven by stronger energy markets, Jordan's monetary and political stability, and growing confidence in the Kingdom's financial system. They also note that many expatriates are transferring larger portions of their savings to Jordan as a secure destination amid ongoing regional uncertainty.

Beyond supporting household incomes, remittances play a vital role in strengthening foreign currency reserves, supporting the Jordanian dinar, increasing bank liquidity and driving economic growth. Jordan's economy expanded by 2.9% in the first quarter of 2026, with economists identifying remittances as one of the contributors to that growth.

Experts are now calling for greater efforts to strengthen ties with Jordanians abroad by expanding investment opportunities, improving communication and introducing incentives that encourage expatriates to channel more of their savings into productive sectors that create jobs and support long-term economic development.
