Cabinet Approves Amendment to Vehicle License Plate System—Government Vehicles to Feature Letter Codes Instead of Numbers
The Council of Ministers, during a session held on Saturday chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Jaafar Hassan, approved an amendment to the vehicle license plate system.اضافة اعلان

Under the new amendment, license plates for government vehicles, temporary import vehicles, and diplomatic vehicles will carry clear letter codes that indicate the entity to which the vehicle belongs. The designations are as follows:

Prime Minister and Ministers: PM

Senate: SN

House of Representatives: PR

Judicial Council: JC

General Government Entities: GV

Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority: AQ

Diplomatic Missions: CD

Temporary Imports: TM

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Department will determine the specific procedures regarding license plates currently in use by government entities. It is important to note that no changes will be made to private, public transport, or cargo vehicle plate numbers.

The amendment aims to replace numeric codes with letters to enhance clarity, transparency, and oversight of government vehicles. The adoption of letter codes aligns with international best practices and is already in place in many countries around the world.

Additionally, the Cabinet decided to allocate the entire proceeds from the sale of special license plate numbers—regardless of their code—through public auctions held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Department to the University Student Support Fund, starting from the upcoming academic semester. This is in addition to the amount already allocated to the fund in the state budget, which was increased by 50% this year to reach 30 million dinars.

The decision is expected to expand the number of university students benefiting from the fund, thereby supporting educational access and equity.

It is also worth noting that the amended system will allow for the buying and selling of license plates without requiring vehicle ownership to be transferred between parties.
