Al-Momani: Strengthening Arab Media Cooperation and Developing Media Capabilities Are Essential to Keeping Pace with Digital Transformations and Current Challenges

Cairo – Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Dr. Mohammad Al-Momani stressed the importance of treating media as a strategic and sovereign sector, closely linked to countries' ability to strengthen their media presence, safeguard public awareness, and protect citizens from disinformation and misinformation campaigns. He emphasized the need to enhance Arab media cooperation and coordination to address current challenges.

Al-Momani made these remarks during his address as head of the Jordanian delegation at the 56th regular session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo.

He expressed Jordan's pride in the fraternal ties and shared interests that unite Arab countries, reaffirming the Kingdom's commitment to strengthening Arab cooperation and coordination, particularly amid the exceptional challenges and circumstances facing the region, which require unified efforts and positions.

He noted that the region is facing complex political, security and humanitarian challenges, alongside rapid transformations in the global and Arab media landscape driven by communication technologies and artificial intelligence.

These developments have brought challenges related to the accuracy and credibility of information, as well as attempts to manipulate facts and shape public perceptions.

Al-Momani stressed that the Palestinian cause remains at the forefront of joint Arab action, emphasizing the importance of sustaining unified Arab efforts to defend the rights of the Palestinian people, convey their suffering to the world, and counter attempts to distort or conceal the facts.

He also highlighted the important role Arab media should play in documenting the humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip, exposing violations and illegal unilateral measures in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and protecting the Palestinian narrative from disinformation and distortion.

He reiterated Jordan's firm position, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their right to establish an independent, sovereign state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions.

He also reaffirmed Jordan's continued historic role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, stemming from the Hashemite Custodianship.

Al-Momani underscored the importance of developing joint Arab media action plans, coordinating messages and positions, and strengthening the international presence of the Arab narrative in a manner that supports political and diplomatic efforts to champion the Palestinian cause.

Regarding rapid developments in artificial intelligence and digital media, Al-Momani highlighted the importance of improving the performance of Arab media institutions and strengthening their capabilities to keep pace with these changes and benefit from the opportunities offered by modern technologies.

He also stressed the need to address challenges related to information credibility and content reliability, while enhancing societies' ability to distinguish between facts and disinformation.

He explained that, as part of its national efforts to develop the government communication system, Jordan has worked to leverage modern technologies and artificial intelligence and improve its communication tools with citizens and media outlets, ensuring that official information is delivered more quickly, clearly and credibly.

Al-Momani reaffirmed Jordan's readiness to continue sharing its expertise and experience with fellow Arab countries through the Ministry of Government Communication and the Kingdom's Permanent Delegation to the Arab League,
as well as through active participation in the Council's committees and working groups, contributing to the development of joint Arab media action.

He stressed the importance of moving Arab media cooperation beyond the exchange of expertise and experiences towards establishing practical partnerships and joint initiatives that strengthen the capabilities of Arab media institutions, support the presence of Arabic-language content, and keep pace with the requirements of sustainable development and digital transformation.

He concluded by reaffirming Jordan's commitment to supporting joint Arab media efforts and strengthening cooperation and integration with fellow Arab countries.

He expressed hope that the current session would produce actionable decisions and recommendations that contribute to building a more influential Arab media system, capable of defending Arab causes and interests and communicating with the world using the language and tools of the modern age.

During his address, Al-Momani congratulated Somalia's Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Abdulfatah Qasim Mahmoud, on his country's assumption of the Council's presidency for the current session.

He also commended the efforts of the Syrian Arab Republic during its presidency of the previous session, as well as those of the Arab League General Secretariat, the Media and Communication Sector, and the Council's Technical Secretariat.

Earlier, Al-Momani participated in the meetings of the Executive Bureau of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, held ahead of the 56th regular session.

The meetings addressed several items on the agenda and discussed ways to strengthen joint Arab media cooperation and coordination and follow up on the implementation of relevant decisions and recommendations.
