A recent Italian study has found that consuming cranberries may improve bone strength and overall bone health. According to the journal Nutrients, researchers from the Universities of Milan and Pavia reviewed 19 scientific studies, including animal trials and human cell model research.

The findings indicate that higher consumption of anthocyanins—naturally occurring compounds found in cranberries—can increase bone mineral density and improve bone strength. A small clinical trial also showed that consuming cranberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants may slightly enhance bone mineral density and the body's ability to absorb nutrients.
The research further suggests that cranberry extracts may reduce the activity of bone-resorbing cells, support bone-forming cells, and protect bone tissue from inflammatory and oxidative stress.
However, the researchers cautioned that clinical evidence remains limited due to small sample sizes and short follow-up periods. While cranberries may be a beneficial addition to support bone health and potentially aid in osteoporosis prevention, they should not be considered a stand-alone treatment.
