Rubbing the face with banana peels has become a new trend on social media, with promoters claiming it has effects similar to Botox injections.
Some users assert that applying banana peels to the skin restores its radiance and reduces wrinkles. However, experts emphasize that there is no scientific evidence supporting these claims, according to Sky News Arabia, citing Verywell Health. Helen He, an assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai, noted that the trend may have arisen from the fact that bananas contain many nutrients, including vitamins C and E.

Zakia Rahman, a clinical dermatology professor at Stanford University, added, “I’m glad in some ways that people are trying to use by-products,” noting that bananas are among the most consumed fruits, yet most of their peels are discarded.
Should Banana Peels Be Used for Skin Care?
Experts say there is no research indicating that rubbing banana peels on the face improves skin. Likewise, claims that it can mimic Botox—which temporarily weakens or paralyzes facial muscles to reduce wrinkles—are unfounded. Rahman explained that although bananas have many health benefits, the skin cannot absorb them effectively, as the vitamin C in bananas cannot penetrate the skin barrier.
Is It Safe to Apply Banana Peels on the Skin?
Rahman advised that people with sensitive skin should exercise caution. Those prone to allergies or with a history of eczema should be particularly careful. Even in normal cases, using banana peels on the skin can cause serious issues, such as irritation or allergic reactions, including burning sensations, pimples, or swelling of the tongue or lips.
Instead, simple and safe ways to maintain healthy skin include drinking plenty of water, getting adequate sleep, and using sunscreen regularly.
