Adrien Thomasson was the match-winner, scoring the only goal in the 52nd minute.
The victory lifted Rennes temporarily to the top of the Ligue 1 standings with 10 points.
Meanwhile, struggling Marseille remained on three points, leaving the club provisionally in 11th place after a difficult start to the season.
Al-Taamari came on as a substitute at the start of the second half.
