Official media reported on Saturday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has directed the use of all resources to support the country’s nuclear program in order to “sharpen the nuclear shield and sword” to protect national sovereignty and security.

The Korean Central News Agency stated that Kim met on Friday with senior officials and scientists at North Korea’s nuclear weapons research institutes, emphasizing that the country’s “highest priority” is to continue developing its nuclear deterrence capabilities.
The agency added, “Comrade Kim Jong Un said that we must constantly sharpen and renew the nuclear shield and sword to reliably ensure national sovereignty, security, interests, and the right to development.”
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung noted that North Korea has pursued a nuclear weapons program for decades, including a secret uranium enrichment effort capable of producing up to 20 nuclear weapons per year.
