The agency reported that Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes located in Kagoshima Prefecture, erupted just before dawn, producing a plume of ash and smoke reaching 4,400 meters into the atmosphere.
A local official told AFP that no damage has been reported so far.
However, the meteorological agency warned of “moderate” ashfall in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures.
Residents were advised to “take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the ash, such as using umbrellas or face masks, and to ensure driving is done slowly.”
The Japanese Meteorological Agency maintained the alert level at three on a five-level scale, which restricts access to mountainous areas.
