At least 20 people were killed in a powerful earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan overnight, according to a new but still preliminary toll released by the Ministry of Health on Monday morning.

Ministry spokesperson Sharafat Zaman said in a video distributed to journalists that “around 320 of our citizens were injured and more than 20 were killed” in the Balkh and Samangan provinces, noting that the figures remain non-final.
An earlier official toll reported nine deaths and over 250 injuries from the 6.3-magnitude quake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
