The death toll from the crash of the Air India aircraft has risen to 279, including passengers, crew members, and residents in the vicinity of the crash site, according to a police source who spoke on Saturday on condition of anonymity. The source confirmed that 279 bodies or body parts have been transported to the city hospital since the disaster occurred.

A previous count had reported 265 fatalities.
The plane crashed on Thursday less than a minute after taking off from Ahmedabad in northwestern India en route to London, at 1:39 p.m. local time (08:09 GMT), according to the Indian Civil Aviation Authority. The aircraft had issued a distress call shortly before crashing outside the airport.
This incident marks the first-ever crash involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner—a long-haul aircraft that entered service in 2011. (Agencies)
