Death Toll from Indian Plane Crash Rises to 279

The death toll from the crash of the Air India aircraft has risen to 279, including passengers, crew members, and residents in the vicinity of the crash site, according to a police source who spoke on Saturday on condition of anonymity. The plane crashed on Thursday less than a minute after taking off from Ahmedabad in northwestern India en route to London, at 1:39 p.m. local time (08:09 GMT), according to the Indian Civil Aviation Authority. The aircraft had issued a distress call shortly before crashing outside the airport.

This incident marks the first-ever crash involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner—a long-haul aircraft that entered service in 2011. (Agencies)
