Trump said on his platform "Truth Social":
"Homeless people must leave immediately, we will provide you with places to stay, but away from the capital. As for criminals, you don’t need to leave — we will put you in jail where you belong."
The White House declined to clarify the legal basis Trump would rely on to expel homeless people from Washington. The Republican president only controls federal lands and buildings in the city.
According to Reuters, Trump intends to hold a press conference Monday "to stop violent crimes in Washington, D.C." It is unclear if he will announce more details about a plan to clear the capital of homeless people.
Mayor Bowser, a Democrat, confirmed that the capital "is not witnessing a sharp rise in crime rates."
The city police reported that violent crime rates in the first seven months of 2025 dropped by 26% compared to last year, while the overall crime rate declined by about 7%.
