TEL AVIV — On Sunday, Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition in Israel, asserted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cannot continue in his role, suggesting the possibility of holding elections even in times of war. Regarding the "promotion of a new Israeli plan for a prisoner exchange deal," Lapid conveyed to the Hebrew-language website "Yedioth Ahronoth," stating, "A fresh plan must be put forward because the mere presence of proposals on the table induces action on the issue, regardless of whether they are accepted." Lapid pointed out that he had informed Netanyahu that the Israeli opposition would extend support "even in the face of painful prices in the hostage deal." Simultaneously, he underscored, "Israel cannot cease its fight because Hamas will seize the first opportunity to return. Bold... intolerable; he must be replaced,” Amad reported. The Hebrew-language newspaper "Maariv" reported that the Israeli opposition is already preparing to replace Netanyahu and form an alternative Israeli government, under the supervision of Israeli War Council member Benny Gantz. Vladimir Beliak, a member of the Knesset (Yesh Atid), spoke on Sunday, expressing, "Netanyahu's low political campaign persists during the war, even as we mourn our martyrs and our prisoners who have fallen." An Israeli Knesset member attacked Netanyahu, stating, "He avoids taking responsibility—bold, intolerable." He added, "We do not demand immediate elections; rather, we believe it is necessary to replace the Prime Minister as he has lost the trust of the people, the world, and the security system." "In times of war, changing the Prime Minister is feasible, and establishing a better, more effective government can aid us in achieving the victory we all desire," he continued. He added, "I believe that Netanyahu has not only weakened us in the past year with his erratic government but continues to do so." Continuing, he said, "Replacing him is both possible and imperative. This week is one of the most challenging for me, and Netanyahu is dealing with matters unrelated to the issue. Enough. We've decided not to join the government. The war budget should not look like this. Forming another government that is superior and more effective is possible, and we are actively working towards that." Regarding the Palestinian state, he stated, "The leadership's response must be a yes, not a no. We have indicated that it is evident we will need to transform the Gaza Strip into a kind of Area B, where security forces have complete control. As for civil administration, we must prepare on several fronts, one of which is incorporating the civilian apparatus of the Palestinian Authority. Netanyahu lacks any understanding of this, and we must present the Israeli position on the table."
