Speaking at a dialogue session at the Middle East Institute in New York, moderated by the Institute’s Syria program director on Wednesday, Al-Shara said that any talk of dividing Syria harms the country first and foremost, as well as the stability of neighboring states, particularly Turkey and Iraq. He called on Israel to return to the situation before December 8, 2024, asserting: “We said we will not be a source of danger to anyone.”
The Syrian president revealed that since the liberation of Damascus, one million refugees have returned to the country, and Captagon exports have dropped by 90%, emphasizing that it is in no one’s interest for Syria to return to its previous state. He stressed that Syria seeks to maintain an equidistant stance toward all parties.
Internal Reconciliation and Strategic Vision
Al-Shara addressed the events in Sweida, noting that mistakes were made by all parties and highlighting new efforts for reconciliation and healing hearts.
He emphasized that the current stage must be judged according to its present circumstances, not past events, and stressed that each stage has its own conditions. He rejected importing ready-made systems or historical templates for application in Syria.
Al-Shara affirmed that Syria is a pivotal country capable of winning over all parties and playing a key role in regional stability. He noted that the security of neighboring countries is linked to Syria’s stability and that force alone will not bring Israel peace.
He also suggested that Washington could help integrate Kurdish forces (under the SDF) into the Syrian army, praising the Syrian people as strong, brave, and dedicated, and asserting that Syria will not align with one bloc against another.
