The Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said that, starting Thursday, the Kingdom will be affected by a cold and moist air mass associated with a weather depression centered north of the island of Cyprus, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures.
Cold, partly cloudy conditions will prevail, turning cloudy, with rainfall beginning in the morning hours over the northern regions of the Kingdom and gradually extending in the afternoon to central areas and parts of the eastern regions.
According to the JMD, rainfall will be heavy at times, especially in the northern and central parts of the Kingdom, including the northern and central Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea area. Thunderstorms and hail may accompany the rain, increasing the risk of flash floods and rising water levels in valleys and low-lying areas. The department stressed the need to exercise the highest levels of caution.
The department added that during nighttime hours, rainfall will extend to limited parts of the southwestern regions. Westerly winds will become active, accompanied by strong gusts reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h, causing dust storms in desert areas and reduced horizontal visibility. Later at night, winds will shift to moderate to active northwesterlies.
The JMD noted that the impact of the cold weather will continue into Friday, with cold, partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy conditions, and a chance of scattered rain showers in parts of the western regions of the Kingdom. During the evening and night hours, precipitation chances will weaken and the weather will gradually stabilize, with increased cold sensation and the formation of fog over mountainous areas and plains.
The department emphasized the importance of avoiding the risk of crossing valleys and areas where rainwater accumulates, remaining alert to the danger of flash floods and rising water levels, and exercising caution while driving on roads experiencing rainfall or fog. It also urged the public to closely follow its weather bulletins.
Greater Amman Municipality Declares ‘Maximum Water Emergency’
The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) announced a “maximum water emergency” status starting Thursday morning to deal with the weather depression affecting the Kingdom.
GAM confirmed the readiness of its field teams to respond to any reports received by the Tlaa Al-Ali Emergency Operations Room, urging citizens to contact the unified call center numbers (102 and 117180) if they observe any issues.
The municipality also called on residents to take necessary precautions, stay away from valleys and low-lying areas, and refrain from indiscriminate disposal of waste, which can block rainwater drainage lines.
GAM stressed the importance of checking submersible pumps in basements and commercial premises located below street level, and urged merchants to take preventive measures when storing goods in warehouses and lower floors.
It further called on contractors and owners of construction projects to secure building materials to prevent them from being swept away and blocking rainwater drainage systems.
