At a time when OpenAI is facing a legal dispute regarding its hardware ventures, the company has officially announced its entry into this market by launching a $230 backlit keyboard, designed to work with its AI-powered programming assistant, Codex.

Named the "Codex Micro," the keyboard was developed in collaboration with Work Louder, a company specializing in keyboard design. OpenAI is promoting it as a new way for ChatGPT users to manage a collection of AI programming agents—semi-autonomous tools capable of writing and executing code with minimal human intervention.
The keyboard features a set of illuminated "agent keys" that display the status of each agent, alongside customizable command keys to quickly trigger the most frequently used Codex functions, and a miniature joystick to run common workflows. It also includes a rotary dial that allows users to control the agent's level of "thinking," which refers to the amount of time and computing power it dedicates to completing a specific task.
OpenAI states that the goal of the device is to turn it into a control hub for agent-based workflows, allowing users to manage their tasks directly from the keyboard instead of relying on a phone or desktop application. All keyboard settings and customization can be controlled via the ChatGPT desktop app.
The company clarified in a statement to TechCrunch that the Codex Micro will be released in limited production, indicating that it is more of a showcase or experimental product than a device intended for mass commercial production. Its primary aim is to signal the company's entry into the hardware market.
However, the more significant announcement came on the same day, following a Bloomberg report revealing another device OpenAI is developing as part of its long-term strategy. According to the report, the device will be a screenless, portable smart speaker that integrates with ChatGPT and features mechanical components capable of moving autonomously.
Details about this device remain limited, as the company has not explained how these different components will be integrated into a single product, while the Bloomberg report noted that the project is still under development and could undergo changes before its launch.
The report added that the new device is being developed with the participation of former Apple engineers, a company currently engaged in a legal battle with OpenAI.
Last week, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of a systematic strategy to acquire confidential information regarding its unannounced products and using that information to develop its own hardware. In response, OpenAI denied the allegations and asserted it committed no wrongdoing.
