25 recipients of the Fields Medal, considered mathematics' highest honor, warned on Friday that the race among AI companies to solve famous mathematical problems risks causing lasting harm to the field.اضافة اعلان

The joint warning letter, signed by prominent scientists, comes days after OpenAI announced it had solved one of the "Millennium Prize Problems" that had eluded mathematicians for generations.

The letter noted that the goals of AI companies and those of the mathematics community are "largely misaligned, "affirming that this trend poses "a general threat to intellectual work."

The 25 signatories represent roughly five decades of Fields Medal history.
The Fields Medal is one of the highest honors in mathematics worldwide, sometimes referred to as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics." The first winner was Pierre Deligne in 1978, with this year's honor going to Yu Ding.

The scientists said the ultimate purpose of posing mathematical problems is to help students develop their skills, a goal they consider more important than actually solving the problems.

They added that "solving problems is merely a tool and a means toward the higher goal of theoretical understanding," noting that these processes "always take time and rely on human interaction."

The letter explained that the real question is "how do we ensure that, as AI changes how work gets done, we don't lose sight of what that work was supposed to achieve."

They stressed the urgent need to address these issues, whether within the mathematics community, among companies developing these technologies, or more broadly across society.

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced that one of its unreleased models had successfully solved the "Navier-Stokes" problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, following an 88-hour process involving thousands of AI agents working in parallel.
