“Fann Wa Chai was founded in 2013, and the main concept of it is to try to integrate culture, arts, and people,” Linda Al-Khoury, the founder of Fann Wa Chai, said in an interview with Jordan News.

Fann Wa Chai, meaning ‘Art and Tea’, is an art gallery, a tea bar, and cultural spot where art fills a large space inside. The founder said that Fann Wa Chai is not aimed at a specific audience: “The idea appeared from my personal experience as a photographer, with experience in creating exhibitions, as I previously noticed that there is a distance between people and art.”

Art is a crucial part of development and expression, but people often place borders between art and themselves, said Khoury. She added that this is because arts and culture have little value in society, and that “this is due to the culture of society and education, as art has no importance in schools.”

Khoury explained that displaying culture and arts in public places brings people closer to art and helps break down the barrier that many people put between themselves and creative works. She said that “people are drawn closer to art when culture and the arts are present in public spaces, instead of confining art to indoor spaces, such as theaters and exhibitions.”

As well as being a place that brings cultural experiences closer to the community, Fann Wa Chai is a place to drink tea. By visiting to drink tea, people discover the art inside: “In Fann Wa Chai, you see art and you may hear people discussing a book, or you hear an artist playing on his instrument.”

The owner added that Fann Wa Chai supports many local businesses by selling their products at the space: “We try to sell products that are all handmade and local, in addition to displaying books by local writers,” Khoury said. “There is always a space to support local products.”

According to Khoury, the space is open for any artist looking to host a workshop, adding that “before the COVID-19 pandemic, we used to do many workshops and activities for children, in addition to live painting workshops.”

Every Tuesday, Fann Wa Chai hosts a variety of cultural activities such as poetry readings and music, among others. “Every Tuesday the place is open to all artists to display their art, so we made the decision to make the most of every Tuesday of the week,” Khoury said.

Currently, Fann Wa Chai is exhibiting For Gaza, a print sale campaign, organized by Darat Al Tasweer. The exhibition features a group of photography pioneers from across the world, who submitted their work to support the For Gaza campaign. Khoury added that 80 photographers from all over the world submitted photos of their work to be sold in unlimited copies to support Gaza projects. “Through the For Gaza campaign, Fann Wa Chai showcases the campaign's work, so that people are exposed to the photos,” Khoury said.
