Self-confidence manifests in subtle details that many might overlook, including posture and head positioning. A simple body language gesture can reflect a person's sense of poise and reassurance, directly influencing how others interact with them.

As feelings of insecurity in novel social situations continue to rise, a behavioral expert reveals a subtle upper-body adjustment that can instantly project confidence. This comes alongside a 2021 study conducted by YouGov, which revealed that 37% of Americans report feeling "not very confident" when entering new social groups.
Dr. Shadé Zahrai, a behavioral expert and author of The High Confidence Mindset: Re-Program Self-Doubt, Reclaim Confidence, and Achieve Success, discussed this simple confidence-boosting gesture during an appearance on communication expert Jefferson Fisher's podcast.
Zahrai explained that this sign involves the upper body—specifically the "distance between the chin and the chest." She detailed how the position of the head and shoulders exposes a person's internal psychological state, noting that individuals naturally drop their shoulders and tilt their heads downward when slumping, withdrawing, or feeling insecure.
She added that increasing the distance between the chin and chest does not mean staring at the ceiling, but rather maintaining a natural, upright head and torso position, which can instill a heightened sense of empowerment and poise.
Furthermore, Zahrai emphasizes that this posture does not merely alter how a person feels internally; it also conveys a clear impression of confidence to others, encouraging them to engage. She noted that when someone acts in a manner that embodies the presence they wish to project, others respond to that behavior, creating a cumulative positive effect on those around them.
According to Zahrai, this physical tendency is tied to the movement of "neck flexion."
Zahrai’s recommendation regarding confidence-enhancing body language aligns with a 2025 study published in the journal Psychophysiology, in which researchers identified a direct link between neck flexion (lowering the head) and negative impacts on self-confidence, as well as diminished mood levels.
3 Tips to Boost Self-Confidence
While body language represents one aspect of cultivating confidence, the American Psychological Association (APA) offers additional evidence-based strategies to foster self-assurance:
1. Positive Self-Talk and Affirmations
Research supports using positive affirmations to enhance psychological and social well-being. This can be practiced by reflecting on core values, personal identity, and positive individual traits.
2. Celebrating Successes
Self-confidence can be developed while mitigating imposter syndrome by reminding oneself of personal accomplishments, both large and small—such as revisiting an email containing positive feedback or taking time to acknowledge congratulations rather than dismissing them.
3. Building Resilience
Fostering resilience serves as a foundational component of building long-term confidence. The APA notes that building resilience rests on four core pillars: connection, wellness, healthy thinking, and meaning. These elements involve maintaining interpersonal connections through empathy, prioritizing physical health, actively pursuing goals, and learning from past experiences to build a more confident future.
