It may feel like you've landed on Mars, but you're actually in Jordan's Wadi Rum, one of the world's most spectacular desert landscapes.
Known as the "Valley of the Moon," Wadi Rum has long captivated visitors with its towering sandstone mountains, vast red desert, and dramatic scenery.
The destination has become even more distinctive with the introduction of "Martian Domes," futuristic accommodations designed to immerse guests in the landscape while offering modern comfort.
The concept was inspired by director Ridley Scott's Oscar-nominated 2015 film The Martian, starring Matt Damon.
The resemblance between Wadi Rum's red desert and the surface of Mars has made the area a popular filming location and a favorite destination for travelers seeking an otherworldly experience.
"When we began designing the domes, the landscape surrounding them looked as though it had been taken directly from the movie," said Sultan Al-Nawafleh, executive director of the camp. "Instead of traveling to Mars, visitors can experience that feeling here in Wadi Rum."
The glass-domed accommodations offer panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains, allowing guests to enjoy the landscape from the comfort of their rooms.
Each dome accommodates up to four people and features a private bathroom, air conditioning, and a private terrace, amenities that are not commonly available in many traditional desert camps.
An overnight stay costs around $320, depending on the season and demand.
The project was developed to encourage visitors to spend more time exploring Wadi Rum rather than limiting their trip to a daytime excursion.
Comfortable accommodations have helped transform the area into a destination for overnight stays, allowing guests to experience the desert's star-filled skies, peaceful atmosphere, and spectacular sunrise and sunset.
"I want visitors to experience the true beauty of Wadi Rum," Al-Nawafleh said. "The stars are breathtaking, and the silence of the desert is unforgettable."
Beyond the unique accommodation, Wadi Rum offers a wide range of outdoor adventures. Visitors can enjoy camel rides, horseback riding, Jeep safaris, dune buggy tours, hot air balloon flights, and rock climbing, while exploring one of Jordan's most iconic natural landscapes.
Many of these activities are organized by local Bedouin communities, providing an important source of income while helping preserve the region's cultural traditions and heritage.
The success of the Martian Domes has further strengthened Wadi Rum's reputation as one of the Middle East's most distinctive tourism destinations, combining breathtaking natural scenery with innovative hospitality inspired by the landscapes of Mars.
